How To Write Good Blog Comments (And Get Them Accepted)

by Chris Friday, August 21 2009

Good blog comments seem to be rare these days. Therefore, I decided to write this article on how to write a good blog comment, and hopefully increase the chance of it being accepted by the moderator.

Now, it's no secret that those who maintain blogs love to get comments and feedback on their work. But, having to moderate blog comments is a huge pain in the @ss.

However, it's a necessity, because you just don't want any Tom, Dick, or Larry to post garbage or spammy links...or even, dare I say it, paid backlinks.

I have compiled a list of things you, as a blog commenter, could do in order to help increase the chance of your comment being accepted.

(If you are a paid backlink spammer, maybe you can learn something from these suggestions too.)

  1. Actually read the blog article. (you'd be surprised)
  2. Write a coherent, well thought out, 2-3 sentence (minimum) comment in response to what the author said.
  3. Perhaps you can provide a personal anecdote about how the post applies to your own experience(s).
  4. Tell the author how great/useful the article was. (Ego-stroking works!)
  5. If the article presents an issue or problem, post a solution.
  6. Suggest additional resources to help the author, or other blog readers.
  7. If it's an opinion post, make your response interesting enough to warrant a second read or follow-up comment.
  8. Ask the author a question. (what? I know, right?)
  9. If the author needs help, offer your assistance. (or at least pretend to Tongue out)
  10. Use your powers of telepathy and force the moderator to accept the comment.
(ok, so I ran out of suggestions)

Also note that combinations of these suggestions tend to work best.

Overall, I think this is a pretty good list, but if you happen to have any suggestions... oh my gosh! Post them as a USEFUL comment!
