FastStone's Screen Capture Software

FastStone Screen Capture

FastStone Screen Capture is simply THE BEST screenshot / screen capture / video recorder software I have ever used...and believe me, I have used many.

This is certainly an essential tool for any web designer / developer. As such, I am filing it under Web Developer Tools You Can't Live Without.

A brief description right from FastStone's website:

"FastStone Capture is a powerful, lightweight, yet full-featured screen capture tool that allows you to easily capture and annotate anything on the screen including windows, objects, menus, full screen, rectangular/freehand regions and even scrolling windows/web pages.

You can choose to send captures to editor, file, clipboard, printer, email, Word/PowerPoint document or upload them to your website. Editing tools include annotating (texts, arrowed lines, highlights), resizing, cropping, sharpening, watermarking, applying edge effects and many more.

It also allows you to record screen activities and sound into highly compressed video files. Other features include global hotkeys, automatic filename generation, support for external editors, a color picker, a screen magnifier and a screen ruler.

FastStone Capture saves files in BMP, GIF, JPEG, PCX, PNG, TGA, TIFF and PDF formats."

Best of all, it pretty darn cheap! Only 19.95 for a lifetime license, but you can try it for free for 30 days as well.

Tools for Checking a Website's Browser Compatibility

by Chris Tuesday, August 18 2009

In the spirit of a great debate regarding the proposed death of Internet Explorer 6 (IE6) over at the about.com Web Design Blog (article found here), I have decided to post a few useful tools for checking a website's browser compatibility. I must say that I strongly support the adoption of newer, better web browsing standards, and it is definitely time for IE6 users to upgrade.

  1. MultipleIEs - Allows user to install old versions of Internet Explorer, 3.0 up to 6.0. Unfortunately, it does not work in Windows Vista. Free.
  2. IE NetRenderer - A very nice online tool that will take a screen shot of the URL of your choice using IE 5.5, 6.0, 7.0, and 8.0. Free.
  3. BrowserShots.org - Probably the most well-known of all the cross-browser testing websites, it supports an amazing amount of browsers, browser versions, and many operating systems (Unix, Windows, Mac OS, BSD). Offers free and a priority (paid) service at $29.95/month.
  4. CrossBrowserTesting.com - The most comprehensive cross-browser testing tool. Very cool how it works. Neat pay-as-you-go credit system. First 5 minutes free.

Web Developer Tools You Can't Live Without: Stackoverflow & Google Webmaster Help Forum

by Chris Friday, August 14 2009

Two great resources for web developers are stackoverflow.com and Google's Webmaster Help Forum. I know they are already fairly popular, but I feel they deserve a mention.

If I ever have a question regarding programming, or I need to do some initial research, I visit stackoverflow.com first.

And if I am stumped with an SEO-related question, I search Google's Webmaster Help Forum.
