Why Paid Online Press Releases Aren't Worth The Paper Their Not Printed On

by Chris Sunday, September 27 2009

There are several big, pay-per-use online press release distribution websites (e.g. prweb.com, 24-7pressrelease.com, ereleases.com), but is there any real SEO value in these services? My guess is no.

Why, do I think that? Well, even though the links from the press release may be "dofollow," I'm willing to bet the Google assigns little to no PageRank value to them.

The main page of the site may have a PR of 6 or 7, but every press release on the site has a Google Toolbar PR of "unranked," and while I understand that the toolbar PR is based on old data, it only makes sense that Google would not assign any value to the press release itself. I'm sure the same goes for Bing and Yahoo! as well.

I am also amazed by the service prices, which start out at a minimum of around $200. A little pricy for something that will most likely drive zero traffic to a website.

Last thing to consider -- Who the heck reads the press releases anyway? Answer: Nobody. They just end up in the void space that is a press release archive.

Does Your Company Have A Good Philosophy?

by Chris Wednesday, September 23 2009

A few weeks ago, I engaged in a great conversation about the importance of having a solid company philosophy. It was with a man who worked as an executive for many years at Worthington Industries, a very large, multi-national corporation that specializes in steel processing.

He showed me a company philosophy card that he had received nearly 31 years ago, when he first started working for Worthington, and to this day -- he still keeps the card in his wallet.

He believed wholeheartedly in Worthington's company philosophy, and he has strong feelings regarding many companies who lack a true belief in a common philosophy and goal.

While it's true that many of today's companies have great marketing copy that explains what philosophy they subscribe to, and sure, it often reads like a dream, but more often than not, they are just empty words. Sometimes, the copy is even written to contain marketing buzzwords in hopes to help generate organic website traffic. Frankly, I personally find that pitiful.

Respect, empowerment, and accountability...it's not a new idea, but by today's standards, it certainly seems to be lost in translation.

Upon request, the former executive was nice enough to provide me with a scanned copy of his 31-year-old philosophy card. I will include the scanned images below.

One final thought:
Profit sharing, for any privately-held company, is the best way to keep one's employees engaged. It provides a true sense of commonality between every worker -- from the bottom, to the top of the proverbial "totem pole."

If the employees do well, and in turn, the company does well, than the employees are rewarded. What better way to reward an employee other than providing an ownership stake in the company they work for and sharing in the profits.

It's a simple idea that is sometimes scoffed at, but think about it -- happy employees make the best employees. Remember that.

Google Adds Parameter Handling and Filtering to Webmaster Tools

by Chris Monday, September 21 2009

Google recently rolled-out an update for Webmaster Tools which added some parameter handling and filtering functionality.

It's actually quite useful, mainly because it enables the ability for you to tell Googlebot which query string parameters to globally ignore within your website's URLs. This will really help with getting the proper URLs indexed, and avoid duplicate content.

I am actually kind of amused, simply because I requested a similar feature a few months ago. I was having problems with Googlebot indexing the same page multiple times, only because I was using Google's URL Builder syntax in order to track incoming Twitter traffic via Google Analytics.

Perhaps I was on to something... Check out the Google Webmaster Tools Help Forum thread here: Indexing of Google's URL Builder links.

This new feature can be found under Site configuration > Settings > Parameter Handling

Below are some screenshots:
